KUCHING – During a recent walkabout at Lorong Sungai Apong, in front of the Sungai Apong Basketball Court (SABA), Dato Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of Kuching South, identified several infrastructure issues affecting residents’ safety and daily movement.
One of the main concerns raised was drainage water overflowing onto the road. After engaging with nearby residents, Dato Wee noted that the existing culvert was overfilled, preventing smooth water flow into the river.
Heavy rainfall and high water discharge from upstream drains have caused flooding along the road and surrounding areas, creating hazardous conditions for motorists and pedestrians.
The flooding has been particularly disruptive for school children who use the route regularly. Apart from traffic delays, the situation poses safety risks to road users navigating the affected stretch.
Dato Wee also observed potholes along the road leading towards Kampung Sungai Apong. Following the visit, he instructed the MBKS Engineering team to carry out immediate repair works.
The potholes have since been filled to improve road safety, while longer-term solutions for the drainage issue are being explored.
MBKS is actively seeking funding to implement drainage improvement works aimed at preventing future flooding.
The council emphasised that addressing these issues is part of its broader commitment to ensuring safe and well-maintained infrastructure for the community.
Dato Wee highlighted that MBKS will continue to prioritise public safety and convenience, stressing that infrastructure upkeep is essential to maintaining the quality of life for Kuching residents.
The walkabout reflects MBKS’s proactive approach in identifying and resolving local infrastructure challenges, reinforcing its role in safeguarding community welfare.
