KUCHING – In the spirit of Gawai Dayak, the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has reached out to 50 families in Sungai Apong Baru through a food aid distribution programme aimed at easing the burden of vulnerable households during the festive season.
The initiative was led by Dato Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of Kuching South, who personally handed over the packages to the recipients.
He emphasised that festive occasions are a time for unity and gratitude and highlighted the importance of ensuring that assistance reaches those who may need additional support.
“Gawai Dayak is a celebration that brings families and communities together. Through this programme, we hope to ease the burden of the recipients and help them prepare for the festive season with greater peace of mind,” said Dato Wee during the event.
The food aid packages contained essential household items and daily necessities, enabling families to prepare for the celebrations with less financial strain.
MBKS stated that the initiative reflects its ongoing commitment to community welfare and social well-being, reinforcing support networks across Kuching South.
Dato Wee also expressed appreciation to Everise, the sponsor of the aid packages, commending the company for its generosity and dedication to community-focused initiatives.
He noted that partnerships between local authorities and private organisations play a vital role in strengthening social responsibility and ensuring that festive cheer is shared widely.
The distribution programme concluded with the presentation of aid packages to all 50 families, marking a meaningful gesture of solidarity ahead of the Gawai Dayak festivities.
Dato Wee extended his greetings to residents of Sungai Apong Baru and the wider Dayak community, underscoring the council’s commitment to inclusivity and support for all communities.
Gawai Dayak, celebrated annually on 1 and 2 June, is a significant cultural festival for the Dayak people of Sarawak, symbolising the end of the harvest season and the beginning of a new cycle.
