KUCHING – The Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Dr. Sim Kui Hian, joined hands with MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and council members to kick off the annual tradition of lighting up the MBKS Community Wet Markets. This year’s celebration focuses on the vibrant decorations at the Stutong and Jalan Petanak markets in Kuching, welcoming the Year of the Snake for Chinese New Year 2025.

The lighting ceremony, marked a symbolic start to the festive season, drawing enthusiastic crowds from across the community. Dr. Sim Kui Hian highlighted the importance of such events in uniting diverse communities in Sarawak, showcasing the beauty of cultural harmony and mutual respect.
Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng expressed his gratitude to the market vendors and the local community for their continued support in transforming these public spaces into vibrant hubs of celebration. “The festive lights not only reflect the joyous spirit of Chinese New Year but also enhance the sense of togetherness in Kuching,” he said.

The Stutong and Jalan Petanak wet markets have long been central to the city’s cultural and economic activities.
