KUCHING – Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng marked International Women’s Day with a small but thoughtful visit to two busy city markets.
Joined by councillors Cr Judy Kho and Cr Albert Tay, he stopped by Stutong Community Market and Kenyalang Park Market to hand out cendol jelly to vendors and shoppers.
The visit served as a simple gesture of appreciation for women and their contributions to daily life. Traders, visitors, and families welcomed the surprise treat, which brought a cheerful mood to the morning rush.
During the visit, Dato Wee spoke about the importance of recognising women in our society. “Women play an important role in our lives and in our community. They contribute in many ways, as mothers, daughters, professionals, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. Their dedication and effort help build a caring and progressive society,” he said.
He pointed out women’s strong presence in many sectors, including local markets where many run stalls and small businesses. “We cannot deny the role women play in building families, strengthening communities, and supporting the local economy,” he added.
The mayor also spent time greeting vendors and offering International Women’s Day wishes. Many traders welcomed the visit and expressed gratitude for the recognition of their work.
International Women’s Day, observed each year on 8 March, celebrates the achievements of women across social, economic, cultural, and political life. In Sarawak, community activities like this reflect a wider effort to recognise women’s impact in everyday spaces.
Markets such as Stutong and Kenyalang Park remain important parts of Kuching’s local economy. Many families rely on these markets for income, and women traders play a large role in keeping these businesses active while balancing family duties.
The distribution of cendol jelly stood as a small gesture with clear meaning. It acknowledged the effort women put into their homes, workplaces, and communities.
Through direct engagement with market vendors and visitors, the mayor highlighted the city’s focus on community spirit and inclusion. The visit also carried a simple message: appreciation for women deserves attention not only on special days but throughout the year.
