KUCHING – Officers from the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) recently completed the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Coordinator Course, reinforcing the council’s commitment to workplace safety and health.
The training forms part of MBKS’s ongoing efforts to strengthen safety standards across its operations. By equipping officers with specialised knowledge, the Council aims to ensure that all divisions and units remain aligned with current regulatory requirements under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994.
The Act mandates the appointment of OSH coordinators to oversee safety and health matters within organisations.
MBKS’s participation in the course demonstrates its proactive approach to compliance while also fostering a culture of responsibility and awareness among staff.
Through the training, officers gained practical insights into risk management, hazard identification, and the implementation of preventive measures.
The programme also emphasised the importance of communication and coordination in maintaining safe working environments.
Council representatives noted that strengthening internal capacity through such initiatives not only improves safety outcomes but also enhances employee confidence and morale.
A safer workplace environment is expected to contribute to greater efficiency and productivity while reducing risks associated with occupational hazards.
The OSH Coordinator Course is part of a broader strategy by MBKS to embed safety practices into daily operations.
By investing in training and capacity building, the Council is working to ensure that safety standards are consistently upheld across all departments.
Observers highlight that MBKS’s initiative reflects a growing emphasis among local authorities in Sarawak on workplace safety and health.
With increasing awareness of occupational risks, councils and government agencies are prioritising training programmes to safeguard employees and ensure compliance with national legislation.
The Council’s commitment to safety underscores its responsibility not only to its workforce but also to the wider community it serves.
By maintaining high standards of occupational safety and health, MBKS aims to set an example for other organisations in Sarawak.
