MBKS Reassessment Aims for Fairness, Mayor Gives Residents Time Until 2026

MBKS Reassessment Aims for Fairness, Mayor Gives Residents Time Until 2026

Mayor Holds Second Dialogue with Jalan Noakes Residents on Reassessment

KUCHING — Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor, Dato Wee Hong Seng, today met with residents of Jalan Noakes, Sungai Apong, for the second time to discuss concerns over reassessment notices recently issued to homeowners.

The dialogue session was part of MBKS’ continuous effort to maintain open communication with the public, especially regarding property assessment exercises carried out by the council.

According to Dato Wee, the reassessment is a routine and legally required process that takes into account home extensions and renovations which increase the total built-up floor area of houses. He stressed that the reassessment was not about changing the rate itself, but ensuring fairness in calculating assessments based on the actual size of the property.

“The rate of assessment remains the same. What changes is the updated built-up area, which needs to reflect the reality on the ground. This ensures fairness for everyone,” he explained.

Addressing the concerns of residents, Dato Wee announced that the new reassessment rates will only take effect from 1 January 2026, giving homeowners more time to plan and prepare for the adjustment.

“I hear you,” he said during the session. “While the reassessment is valid, I understand that sudden enforcement can feel like a burden. That is why MBKS has agreed to delay the effective date so residents can adjust accordingly.”

Residents expressed their gratitude for the Mayor’s openness and willingness to listen directly to their concerns. Many agreed that the reassessment was necessary and welcomed the decision to defer its implementation.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to work together in the spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation. Dato Wee also assured that MBKS will remain approachable and people-oriented, always ready to listen and find solutions that are fair to all.
