KUCHING, Jan 21 – The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) remains steadfast in maintaining its assessment rates at the same level since the 1970s. While other local councils across Malaysia, including those in Perak, Selangor, and Kuala Lumpur, have raised their rates to cover rising operational costs, MBKS continues to prioritize affordability for residents.
Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, Dato Dr. Sim Kui Hian, acknowledged the financial strain this decision places on MBKS. Operational costs such as staff salaries, bonuses, and rubbish collection fees have significantly increased over the years.
“Even Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has adjusted their rates, but Sarawak has kept theirs unchanged since the 1970s. This creates additional pressure on our councils,” Dr. Sim said during a light-switching ceremony at Taman Sahabat, the Malaysia-China Friendship Park.
To alleviate financial burdens, Dr. Sim urged local representatives to contribute to funding initiatives, particularly for festive decorations.
He emphasized that council buildings like MBKS serve as community hubs, equipped with public amenities such as gardens, amphitheatres, and auditoriums. “Unlike other councils where people come just to pay bills—‘bayar dan bayar sahaja’—MBKS facilities stand as landmarks offering leisure and social engagement opportunities.”
In his remarks, MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng shared updates on the council’s commitment to improving public spaces. This year, lighting will be extended to more parks and public areas, enabling residents to enjoy them even at night.
Notable upgrades include the ongoing project at Hui Sing Park, slated for completion this year. Two additional parks, including one in BDC, will also see improvements, with consultants appointed to manage the developments.
MBKS’ dedication to enhancing public facilities while maintaining affordability underscores its role as a community-oriented council, setting a benchmark for others to follow.
