MBKS Launches Intergenerational Fashion Show and Poster Competition

KUCHING – The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has unveiled two new initiatives designed to strengthen ties between generations: “Two Ages, One Runway: A Generation Fashion Show” and “My Grandparents, My Heart, My Heroes” Poster Design Competition.

The announcement was made during a press conference attended by Dato Zaiedi Suhali, Deputy Mayor of Kuching South; Cr Judy Kho, Chairman of the Ageing Committee; Cr Albert Tay, Chairman of the Child Friendly Cities Initiative; and other councillors.

Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng highlighted that MBKS’s recognition as a UNICEF Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) Candidate City on 4 December 2025, the first in Borneo, alongside its membership in the Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities since 2024, reflects the council’s dedication to building a city inclusive of all ages.

The fashion show will see children and senior citizens share the runway, celebrating creativity, confidence, and active ageing. Participation is capped at 35 pairs, accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Meanwhile, the poster design competition invites children to express admiration and affection for their grandparents through art. The initiative aims to nurture empathy, creativity, and family values while encouraging young participants to reflect on the importance of intergenerational relationships.

Both programmes are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Prizes will be awarded to winners in both events. For the fashion show, awards include Champion, First Runner-Up, Second Runner-Up, and Special Awards. The poster competition will recognise a Champion, First Runner-Up, Second Runner-Up, and Consolation Prize recipients.

MBKS emphasised that these initiatives are part of its broader mission to foster a caring, inclusive, and harmonious community in Kuching. By bringing together different generations, the council hopes to encourage mutual respect, creativity, and stronger family bonds.
