MBM Ensures Traders Not Burdened at Pujut Corner Fruit Market

MIRI – The Miri City Council (MBM) has reassured traders at the seasonal fruit market in Pujut Corner that any charges introduced will remain minimal and will not place undue strain on local businesses.

Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang, who also serves as Pujut assemblyman, explained that the council’s approach is designed to provide fair opportunities for traders while ensuring the market is managed in an orderly and efficient manner.

“The amount required will be very minimal. Our aim is not to burden but to ensure that all groups have a fair opportunity,” he said during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri Reception on Monday.

Yii clarified that MBM is not demanding payments from traders currently operating at the site. Instead, the proposal to upgrade the Old Bus Terminal at Pujut Corner into a seasonal fruit market is intended to enhance its use as a promotional hub and create a more sustainable trading environment.

He emphasised that consolidating fruit sales in one location would allow MBM to better oversee cleanliness, waste management and environmental concerns.

This, he noted, would benefit both traders and visitors by creating a more comfortable and organised setting.

Renovation works are already underway at the site, including repainting buildings and fences, as well as preparing designated stalls for vendors.

The improvements aim to provide a more welcoming atmosphere for customers while supporting small traders with better facilities.

Although the number of traders who will be accommodated has not yet been finalised, the council expects the market to attract a significant number of vendors.

The initiative is seen as a step towards boosting local economic activity while offering consumers easier access to seasonal produce.

The seasonal fruit market is a familiar feature in Miri, particularly during festive periods such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, when demand for fresh fruit rises sharply.

By formalising and upgrading the site, MBM hopes to encourage more participation from local traders while ensuring the area remains clean and well-managed.

Officials believe the move will not only support small businesses but also contribute positively to the wider economy.

The seasonal market is expected to become a focal point for community interaction, providing both residents and visitors with a vibrant space to enjoy local produce.
