LIMBANG – A “Wandering Session” organised by the Majlis Daerah Limbang (MDL) and the Limbang Kedayan Association took place on Sunday, bringing together local residents and council officials to strengthen collaboration and deepen understanding of municipal services.
The event, officiated by MDL Chairman Councillor Sufian Mohat, convened members of the Kedayan community and representatives from various departments of the council.
In his address, Sufian underscored the pivotal role of assessment tax in financing public amenities, waste management and infrastructure works delivered by the council.
“The tax collection proceeds are used to finance the maintenance of public facilities, urban cleanliness, waste management services and the implementation of infrastructure projects that benefit the local community,” he said.
The session featured briefings delivered by department representatives covering topics such as assessment tax management, community health services, waste-collection operations and current development initiatives under MDL.
A subsequent dialogue segment gave residents an opportunity to raise suggestions and concerns directly with council staff.
The area governed by MDL, the Limbang District in northern Sarawak, is known for its cultural diversity, including the Kedayan ethnic group among its communities
Sources note that the Kedayan population plays a significant role in local cultural life. The Kedayan Association in Limbang is also reported to be planning its own building on a 1.64-acre site, signalling its ongoing development.
By facilitating direct engagement with the Kedayan community, the council aims to promote inclusive service delivery and reinforce the shared responsibility of municipal governance.
The event is also consistent with broader efforts by MDL to upgrade local infrastructure and public amenities.
MDL had previously announced plans to develop 18 new tourism sites across the district over the next five years, underscoring its commitment to holistic growth.
The Wandering Session reflects MDL’s strategy of forging stronger ties with ethnic and community organisations to ensure that development plans accommodate local input and cultural sensitivities.
Attendees welcomed the forum as a constructive step towards more transparent dialogue and enhanced collaboration between the Kedayan community and local authorities.
Moving forward, the council intends to follow up on the issues raised during the dialogue and further encourage community participation in municipal programmes.
The focus remains on ensuring that tax contributions are clearly linked to visible improvements in services and infrastructure, thereby reinforcing accountability and the social contract between residents and the local government.
