Meradong Assemblyman Awards Education Incentives to 196 Students

Meradong Assemblyman Awards Education Incentives to 196 Students

BINTANGOR – Meradong Assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing recognized 196 students for their academic achievements during the Form 6 Program: My Journey to University incentive presentation ceremony at SMK Meradong on Thursday.

The recipients included 72 top-performing Malaysian Higher Education Certificate (STPM) students and 124 individuals pursuing higher education at universities.

Datuk Ding emphasized that the incentives symbolize community support for educational excellence, acknowledging the sacrifices of students, parents, and teachers.

“This incentive is a small token of appreciation to the students, and I want you all to know that the community and local leaders are always by your side,” he stated. The initiative aims to boost morale and confidence among students transitioning to tertiary education.

In alignment with Sarawak’s broader educational strategies, Datuk Ding highlighted the state’s upcoming Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES), set to launch in 2026.

This scheme will cover tuition fees at state-owned institutions like Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak and Curtin University Malaysia, with additional living allowances for low-income families.

Concurrently, Datuk Ding announced a RM150,000 Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) project to upgrade SMK Meradong’s infrastructure, including air conditioning installation in the hall.

This effort mirrors earlier RTP initiatives, such as a RM100,000 upgrade at SMK Tong Hua, reflecting a sustained commitment to enhancing educational facilities in the region.

The event underscored Datuk Ding’s focus on STEM education and human capital development, key pillars of Sarawak’s economic growth strategy.

His ongoing engagement with constituents including pre-Gawai longhouse visits and crime prevention programs demonstrates a holistic approach to community development.
