BINTANGOR – The Meradong Festival 2025 drew significant attention with its speed boat race, which attracted participants from across Sarawak, including districts in both the northern and southern regions. The event was hailed as one of the most successful in recent years due to the strong turnout.
Local representative Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing, State Assemblyman for Meradong, praised the enthusiasm shown by competitors and spectators alike.
He described the race as a highlight of the festival and expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Tourism and Entrepreneur Development for providing financial support to ensure the festival’s smooth organisation.
“This is a very encouraging development. I would also like to express my appreciation to the Ministry for channeling a grant for the organisation of the Meradong Festival this year,” he told reporters.
Looking ahead, Datuk Ding urged the ministry to consider increasing allocations for next year’s festival, noting that additional resources could help expand the scale of the speed boat race in 2026.
He also acknowledged the contributions of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and government agencies, whose involvement ensured the success of the festival’s diverse programmes.
“I hope this support can continue for the Meradong Festival in the future so that events like this can grow and benefit all levels of society,” he added.
Safety remained a key concern throughout the event. Datuk Ding reminded visitors to exercise caution when attending speed boat races, stressing that authorities such as the police and the Civil Defence Force (APM) were on standby to maintain order and safeguard public wellbeing.
The Meradong Festival, which has become a staple in Bintangor’s cultural calendar, not only entertained residents but also showcased the district’s ability to host events of international standard.
The lively atmosphere reflected the community’s commitment to promoting tourism, cultural pride, and social unity.
By combining sporting excitement with cultural celebration, the festival demonstrated how local initiatives can attract wide participation and foster community spirit.
Organisers believe that with continued support, the Meradong Festival will remain a platform for showcasing Sarawak’s vibrancy and hospitality to visitors from across the state and beyond.
