Meradong Floods Closely Watched as Longhouses Face Rising Waters

BINTANGOR – Authorities are maintaining close surveillance of flood conditions in Meradong following several days of heavy rainfall that have affected longhouse communities in low-lying areas.

Meradong Assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing carried out site inspections at Rumah Panjang Untin in Sungai Mador and Rumah Michael Thomas in Nanga Stras on Saturday.

His visit aimed to gather firsthand information on the impact of rising river levels and to engage directly with residents facing encroaching floodwaters.

The prolonged downpour has caused rivers in the constituency to swell, with water entering house compounds and disrupting access routes.

Residents expressed concern over the worsening situation, particularly in areas where longhouses are located close to rivers prone to tidal surges.

During his visit, Datuk Ding emphasised the importance of accurate on-site assessments to ensure that assistance is properly coordinated.

He noted that early mitigation measures are critical in reducing risks to affected households. “Obtaining firsthand information allows us to plan appropriate support and respond quickly to the needs of residents,” he said.

At Rumah Michael Thomas, he inspected river levels and highlighted the vulnerability of nearby longhouses should water continue to rise.

The Assemblyman assured residents that relevant agencies and local authorities have been alerted to the situation, with operational readiness in place should conditions deteriorate.

Datuk Ding also urged villagers to remain vigilant, advising them to monitor weather updates and river conditions closely.

He stressed that safety and wellbeing remain the top priority, and pledged that any necessary assistance will be coordinated based on current reports from agencies on the ground.

Local authorities have been tasked with ensuring swift responses, including the mobilisation of resources if evacuation becomes necessary.

The Assemblyman reiterated that preparedness is essential, particularly in areas susceptible to tidal surges and flash floods.

The monitoring effort reflects ongoing collaboration between community leaders and government agencies to safeguard residents in Meradong.

With weather conditions still uncertain, authorities continue to encourage proactive measures and community awareness to minimise risks.
