KUCHING: Malaysia’s muay thai fraternity has reason to celebrate after national athlete Mohd Mikail Ghazali Zulfikar, popularly known as Miki Ghazali, captured the gold medal at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand. Competing on one of the sport’s most respected stages, the 16-year-old proved that composure, preparation and belief can overcome experience and pressure.
Miki’s achievement came during his debut appearance at the SEA Games, an occasion that would test even seasoned fighters. The young Sarawakian rose to the challenge in the men’s 57-kilogram category, defeating Thailand’s Suphakon Sirilun in the final held at the iconic Lumpinee Boxing Stadium. Fighting the host nation’s representative on home ground, Miki delivered a controlled and confident performance that impressed judges and spectators alike.
Speaking to reporters upon his arrival at Kuching International Airport last night, Miki expressed gratitude for the support he received from Malaysians throughout the tournament. He said his age did not matter once he stepped into the ring, as success in muay thai depended more on skill, confidence and proper preparation.
He admitted to feeling nervous before the final bout but said his training helped him stay focused. According to Miki, facing a Thai opponent in the final was expected, and he was mentally ready for the challenge. He described the victory as a blessing and thanked his coaches, teammates and supporters for believing in him.
In the gold medal match, Miki dominated all three rounds against Suphakon, earning a unanimous 10–9, 10–9, 10–9 decision from the judges. His movement, timing and ring awareness allowed him to control the pace and neutralise the home fighter’s attacks. Earlier in the semi-finals, Miki overcame Laos representative Seuaphom Thongbang in a closely contested bout, winning by a 2-1 decision to book his place in the final.
Despite the historic achievement, Miki said he has not yet made plans for his next steps. He remains focused on improving himself and hopes Malaysians will continue to support his journey as a national muay thai athlete. For now, the young fighter is taking time to appreciate the moment and the honour of representing the country on the regional stage.
Miki Ghazali’s triumph not only adds to Malaysia’s medal tally at the 2025 SEA Games but also signals the arrival of a promising new talent in Southeast Asian muay thai. His victory serves as inspiration to young athletes across the nation, showing that discipline and determination can lead to success, even at a young age.
