Mile 8 Flyover Project Advances with Consultant Appointed

KUCHING — The long-awaited Mile 8 Kuching-Serian flyover project has moved a step closer to reality following the appointment of a consultant firm to carry out detailed studies and design works. The development marks important progress in efforts to ease persistent traffic congestion along one of the busiest stretches connecting Kuching and Serian.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang confirmed that the consultant has been engaged to undertake the necessary technical assessments for the proposed flyover at the Mile 8 junction. He described the appointment as a positive step forward and expressed hope that the project could enter the tender stage within a year.

Speaking when met at his Batu Kitang Service Centre, Lo said the 8th Mile junction has long been a major traffic bottleneck, especially during peak hours. The area sees a heavy flow of vehicles daily, including commercial lorries, private cars and commuters travelling between Kuching and Serian. Rapid development in the southern corridor of Kuching has further increased traffic volume, placing additional pressure on the existing road network.

Lo revealed that he has been maintaining close communication with Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi to obtain updates and convey concerns raised by residents and road users in the Batu Kitang constituency. He expressed appreciation to Nanta for assisting in facilitating the implementation of the key infrastructure project.

The flyover project, which carries an estimated cost of RM480 million, was prioritised and approved in June 2024. It forms part of the critical redline upgrades under the Pan Borneo Highway initiative. The project is fully funded and implemented by the federal government, with approvals, technical assessments and allocations managed at the federal level.

Lo acknowledged that certain delays were beyond the control of the state representatives, as the matter involves federal procedures and processes. Nevertheless, he stressed that he would continue to follow up closely and push for the project to be expedited due to its importance to the growing community.

Once completed, the Mile 8 flyover is expected to significantly improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and enhance road safety for motorists travelling between Kuching and Serian. It is also anticipated to support economic activities and accommodate future growth in the area.

The project is targeted for completion by 2027, offering hope for smoother and safer journeys along this vital route.
