Miri Blood Donation Boosts Volunteerism, Ensures Hospital Supply Stability

MIRI – Local organisations in Miri have strengthened their commitment to community welfare through a blood donation campaign held at GCM Miri Cempaka Hall on Sunday, aimed at supporting the needs of Miri Hospital.

The event, which began at 9.30 am, was jointly organised by the Miri Gymkhana Club, Miri Community Caring Association, Kaying Community Association, and Miri Badminton Association. The campaign drew encouraging participation from residents, reflecting strong community spirit and volunteerism.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, and Piasau State Assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, attended the campaign to show support.

He emphasised the importance of such initiatives in ensuring that Miri Hospital maintains sufficient blood reserves, particularly during emergencies.

“I would like to express my deepest appreciation and gratitude to all the blood donors who were willing to take the time to come and donate today. Your contribution is very meaningful and can save lives,” he said.

The campaign was held in collaboration with the Miri Hospital Blood Bank and the Miri Red Crescent Society, with organisers setting a target of collecting at least 60 packs of blood.

Datuk Sebastian Ting noted that demand for blood is expected to rise ahead of the Chinese New Year and Hari Raya festive seasons, urging the public to continue donating as part of early preparedness.

To encourage participation, organisers provided incentives to donors. The first 30 donors received a five-kilogram pack of rice and a goodies bag, while subsequent donors were given a one-kilogram pack of rice along with a goodies bag.

The campaign also received sponsorship support from Hock Hiang Hui Trading Sdn Bhd and Puma Sera Restaurant Malaysia & Indonesian Food, highlighting the private sector’s role in supporting health and welfare initiatives in Miri and the wider Piasau area.

Organisers stressed that beyond meeting hospital needs, the campaign also aimed to foster a culture of volunteerism and strengthen community bonds.

By combining public participation with private sector support, the initiative underscored the collective responsibility of ensuring healthcare readiness in Miri.
