MIRI – The vision of transforming Miri into a green, smart and highly liveable city was reinforced on Sunday through the hosting of the Miri City Mayor’s Awards 2025, organised by the Miri City Council (MCC).
The ceremony was officiated by Mayor of Miri City and Pujut Assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang, who highlighted the awards as a meaningful platform to recognise individuals and organisations whose contributions have significantly benefited the local community.
This year’s theme, “Miri – Green Smart & The Most Liveable International Resort City”, reflects the city’s long-term development goals, aligning with sustainability and inclusivity.
Adam Yii noted that since its inception in 2018, the awards have grown in stature, with 46 nominations received in 2025, an encouraging increase that demonstrates rising community awareness of the importance of leadership, talent, and service.
A total of 22 recipients were selected based on their alignment with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), underscoring Miri’s aspiration to grow in a balanced and inclusive manner.
This year also marked a historic milestone with the introduction of the Miri City Mayor’s Special Award 2025 (Posthumous): Pioneering Contribution to the Development of Miri, presented to the late Yong Khow in recognition of his lasting legacy and service to the city.
Award categories spanned diverse fields, including Youth, Culture and Sports, Community Work and Young Leadership, Tourism Promotion, Safety and Security, Youth Training and Community Service, Environment, Media and Education.
Among the recipients were the Miri Youth Association, Miri Musical Society, IANA Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (Siti Payung), Mercure Miri City Centre, SMK Merbau, and My Sufri Chanel by Sufri Yusof Shamsudin.
The Datuk Bandar’s Special Award 2025 for Tourism was presented to Lee Tian Song @ Harry Lee, while the evening’s highest honour, the Grand Miri City Mayor’s Award, was bestowed upon Dato’ Sri Law Kiu Kiong for his extensive contributions to Miri’s development and prosperity.
The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests including Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts and Piasau Assemblyman Dato Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching Dr Abdullah Zulkifli, Miri City Deputy Mayor Ariffin Mohamad, Miri Division Resident Galong Luang, Miri District Officer Siti Rohanie Yusof, alongside former mayors, councillors, department heads, and members of the Miri City Child Councillors.
The event reinforced Miri’s commitment to sustainability, inclusivity, and community-driven progress, positioning the city as a model for balanced urban development in Sarawak.
