MIRI – A 22-year-old motorist was killed in a collision involving a car and a four-wheel-drive vehicle on the Miri-Bintulu coastal road near Bekenu on 9 September.
The fatal crash occurred at about 8pm, according to the Miri District Police Headquarters.
Police said the car was being ridden by a local man travelling from Batu Niah towards Miri, while the four-wheel-drive vehicle was driven by a 30-year-old local man travelling in the opposite direction, from Bekenu towards Batu Niah.
Preliminary information indicated that the vehicle lost control while travelling along the coastal road and entered the opposite lane.
The car subsequently collided with the rear-left section of the four-wheel-drive vehicle. The impact left the driver seriously injured.
A medical assistant from Miri Hospital who attended the scene confirmed the motorist’s death at the location at about 8.20pm on the same day.
The driver of the four-wheel-drive vehicle sustained minor injuries in the collision.
Police have opened an investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which concerns offences involving dangerous or reckless driving resulting in death.
The Miri District Police said investigations were continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision and determine the events leading up to the crash.
Members of the public who witnessed the incident or have information that could assist the investigation have been urged to come forward.

The incident adds to concerns over road safety on routes used by motorists travelling between communities in the northern part of Sarawak. Police have reminded road users to exercise care and remain attentive while travelling.

Police stressed that compliance with road rules is important in reducing risks to drivers and other road users. The investigation remains ongoing, and further details may be released by police as the case progresses.
