KUCHING – Efforts to address recurring flash floods in Taman Matang Jaya are set to involve closer coordination between local authorities, government agencies and the area’s developer following an on-site assessment of drainage problems.
Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman visited the affected area on 10 September to inspect locations that have frequently experienced flash flooding, including Lorong 9B.
He said an initial assessment indicated that drainage problems were among the factors contributing to the flooding in the area.
Following the site inspection, Fazzrudin brought together representatives from the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), Public Works Department (JKR), Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) and developer Mornington to assess conditions on the ground and discuss possible measures.
The discussion resulted in an agreement among the parties to work together on improvements to the drainage system in the affected area.
The planned cooperation is aimed at addressing the drainage issue and reducing the likelihood of flash floods recurring in parts of the housing area.
Fazzrudin said the site visit was intended to provide the relevant agencies and developer with a clearer understanding of the conditions faced by residents.
The involvement of several agencies reflects the different responsibilities associated with drainage, infrastructure and development within the affected area. Coordination between the parties will therefore be required to determine the appropriate measures and their implementation.
Community leaders were also present during the inspection and discussions. They included the Pemanca, Penghulu, Ketua Kaum and Kapitan, who provided information and feedback on the situation experienced by residents.
Members of the PBB N.6 Tupong Branch executive committee also attended the site visit.
The participation of community representatives provided an opportunity for local concerns to be communicated directly to the agencies and developer involved in addressing the issue.
Recurring flash floods can affect residents’ daily activities and raise concerns about access, property and general safety, particularly when drainage systems are unable to cope with heavy rainfall.
The latest assessment is expected to support further discussions on measures that can improve drainage conditions in Taman Matang Jaya.
Fazzrudin expressed hope that cooperation between the agencies, developer and local community would lead to an effective solution and reduce the risk of further flash flooding.
The assemblyman also said the efforts were intended to support the comfort and well-being of residents in the affected neighbourhood.
With the relevant parties now agreeing to work together on drainage improvements, attention will turn to identifying the necessary works and ensuring that the issue is addressed through coordinated action.
The site assessment and subsequent discussion mark an effort to move from identifying the recurring flooding problem towards practical measures to improve the area’s drainage system.
