MIRI – The Miri Divisional Disaster Management Committee (JPBB) has intensified preparations for the 2025/2026 Northeast Monsoon (MTL) following recent incidents of flooding, fires and storms in the division.
A meeting chaired by Miri Divisional Resident and JPBB Chairman, Galong Luang, was held at the Resident’s Office on Wednesday to coordinate disaster response strategies.
Galong commended agencies for their swift action in handling monsoon-related incidents and reminded district-level committees to ensure victims receive immediate and orderly assistance.
As of 10 December 2025, three Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) were opened to shelter affected families.
These include PPS PBSM for fire, flood and storm victims, PPS SMK Suai for flood victims, and PPS SK Kampung Angus, which also housed flood evacuees. In total, 162 victims from 58 families were accommodated.
Galong also addressed the road closure at the Ngu junction towards Batu Niah town, urging the public to use alternative routes despite longer travel times. He expressed concern over unsafe behaviour by individuals attempting to cross via a suspended pipeline, despite warnings issued by the Public Works Department (JKR).
Repair works are scheduled to begin with the installation of a 1.8-metre HDPE culvert, which will also restore water supply to affected households.
The Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) has been tasked with increasing clean water delivery logistics and opening main taps at strategic locations to ease access for residents.
Galong conveyed a directive from Minister in Charge of JPBB Miri, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, urging agencies such as JKR, Miri City Council, Subis District Council and Marudi District Council to clear drains to ensure floodwaters recede quickly.
Weather forecasts indicate the Northeast Monsoon, which began on 13 November 2025, will continue until March 2026.
A weak La Niña is expected to persist until February 2026, with rainfall between December 2025 and April 2026 projected to remain at average levels.
In terms of landslide preparedness, the Sarawak Minerals and Geosciences Department (JMG) has installed a ground movement detector on the Miri Hill Slope. The system will trigger sirens to alert nearby residents if ground movement is detected.
Galong extended appreciation to frontline agencies including BOMBA, PDRM, ATM, RELA, and others for their continuous monitoring, particularly in high-risk hillside areas during heavy rainfall.
The meeting was attended by Miri Division Deputy Resident Bujang Rahman Seli, Subis District Officer Norlila Ulis, Beluru District Officer Charles Aloysius Lisu, Miri Division Health Officer Dr P. Raviwharmman Packierisamy, Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, Miri Zone 6 Fire Chief PgKB I Ismaidi Hj Ismail, and representatives from various agencies including APM, METMalaysia Sarawak, JMG, JKR, JPS, MBM, JBALB, SWSB, UKAS and others.
