MIRI – A man in his late 30s was sentenced to five months in prison by the Miri Magistrate’s Court on 8 June after pleading guilty to stealing an aluminium ladder. The incident took place at a residence on Jalan Kelinai 7, Pujut 7C, Miri, on 27 May.
The theft was reported by the victim, a pensioner, who discovered the ladder missing from his property. Following investigations, police traced the suspect and arrested him on 3 June at approximately 9.30 pm.
The arrest was carried out by a team from the Crime Prevention Branch (CPJ) of the Miri Central Police Station, together with officers from the Miri District Criminal Investigation Division.
During the operation, police successfully recovered the stolen ladder along with several pieces of evidence to support the prosecution.
The suspect was subsequently charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which deals with theft offences.
Miri District Police Chief emphasised that theft and burglary cases have shown an upward trend in both residential and commercial areas.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities. Community cooperation, he stressed, is vital in helping police curb such crimes and ensure that offenders are brought to justice.
The case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in tackling property-related crimes. Police have consistently reminded residents to take precautionary measures, such as securing valuable items and installing safety features, to reduce the risk of theft.
At the same time, authorities continue to conduct patrols and targeted operations to deter criminal activity.
The sentencing serves as a reminder of the legal consequences of theft, with penalties including imprisonment under the Penal Code.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to protecting communities and maintaining public order in Miri and across Sarawak.
Members of the public with information on theft or burglary activities are encouraged to contact the Miri District Police Headquarters or the nearest police station.
Police have expressed appreciation for community support, noting that public vigilance plays a crucial role in ensuring the enforcement of laws and safeguarding neighbourhoods.
