MIRI – The tale of a street dog named Tompok has been elevated from a local anecdote to a defining narrative of community spirit and loyalty in Miri.
During the Tompok Family Day Reunion Programme held at Pantai Tompok on Sunday morning, Miri City Council (MBM) Mayor YB Adam Yii reflected on the profound impact this animal has had on the city’s social fabric.
The event, which took place at 11 am, served as a gathering point for volunteers, residents, and animal lovers who have supported Tompok over the years.
Mayor Yii noted that while many initially viewed Tompok merely as a stray dog adopted by the neighbourhood, the deeper significance of his story lies in the relationships he fostered.
Specifically, the bond between Tompok and the late Din Besut, along with the sustained care provided by the wider community, illustrates a sincere connection between humans and animals.
“This is not just a story of a street dog,” the mayor stated. “It is a story of loyalty, friendship, compassion and human values and is even part of the beautiful story that Miri city has.”
He drew parallels between Tompok and Hachiko, the famous Japanese Akita known globally for its unwavering loyalty. While Hachiko represents a universal symbol of devotion, Mayor Yii argued that Tomпок’s story is uniquely Miri’s own.
He expressed a desire for this narrative to gain wider recognition, suggesting that it should stand alongside the city’s more traditional tourist attractions.
Currently, visitors to Miri are often drawn to natural landmarks such as Canada Hill, Mulu National Park, and the region’s pristine beaches. However, the mayor hopes that future tourists will also come to know the story of Tompok.
