MIRI – Miri has officially been recognised as the hub of Orang Ulu crafts and creative arts with the opening of the Miri Craft Festival 2025, which showcases heritage, innovation and regional participation.
The festival was launched at the Forum Cultural Centre Miri on Wednesday by Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Sarawak, who represented his Minister, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
Datuk Sebastian Ting highlighted that festivals such as this act as catalysts for promoting the talents of local craft enthusiasts, while creating economic opportunities rooted in arts and culture.
He added that consistent organisation of cultural events strengthens Sarawak’s identity both nationally and internationally, aligning with the government’s vision to expand the creative industry.
Organised by the Sarawak Craft Council in collaboration with agencies and community bodies, the festival runs from 10 to 14 December 2025.
It features diverse programmes including cultural exhibitions, traditional sports and creative showcases, reflecting the vibrancy of Orang Ulu heritage.
Regional participation has once again demonstrated the festival’s appeal as a platform for cultural exchange, reinforcing Miri’s role as a centre for traditional crafts and creative innovation.
The opening ceremony was attended by Miri Division Resident Galong Luang, Sarawak Craft Council CEO Suriya Charles Buas, Head of Arts, Culture & Heritage Division Dr. Elena Gregoria Chai Chin Fern, and Director of Malaysian Handicrafts Sarawak Branch Mohd Tuan Fu’ad Ariffin, alongside other dignitaries.
The recognition of Miri as a craft hub is expected to boost tourism, empower local artisans and preserve Orang Ulu traditions, ensuring that Sarawak’s cultural heritage continues to thrive in the modern era.
