MIRI — Police in Miri have stepped up enforcement against illegal motorcycle activities, resulting in the confiscation of 16 motorcycles and the issuance of 50 summonses during a late-night operation targeting so-called “road thugs” in the district.
The operation, carried out by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters, was conducted from 11.00pm on March 14 until 4.00am the following day. According to Miri District Police Chief, ACP Mohd Farhan Lee bin Abdullah, the move was in response to increasing public complaints about reckless motorcycle activities that were disrupting traffic flow and threatening public safety.
He said enforcement teams focused on several key areas known for such activities, including Jalan Piasau, Jalan Miri Bypass, Jalan Marina, Jalan Baitumal and Jalan Tanjung Lobang. These locations have been identified as hotspots where illegal racing and unsafe riding practices frequently occur, particularly during late-night hours.
During the operation, police checked a total of 37 individuals and inspected 30 motorcycles. Investigations revealed a range of offences committed by the riders. Among the violations detected were riding without a valid driving licence, illegal modifications to motorcycle structures, use of modified exhaust systems producing excessive noise, absence of side mirrors, missing registration numbers, and the use of decorative or “fancy” number plates that do not comply with regulations.
Following the inspections, 16 motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for further investigation and enforcement action. Authorities believe such measures are necessary to deter repeat offenders and maintain discipline among road users.
ACP Mohd Farhan Lee stressed that the police will not tolerate any form of street gang activity that could endanger lives. He warned that strict action will continue to be taken against individuals who disregard traffic laws and engage in reckless behaviour on public roads.
He also reminded the public to comply with all road regulations and avoid making unauthorized modifications to their vehicles. Such actions not only violate the law but also pose serious risks to other motorists and pedestrians.
The police have called on members of the public to cooperate by providing information on illegal motorcycle activities. Any relevant details can be reported directly to the Miri District Police Headquarters to assist in ongoing enforcement efforts.
The latest operation reflects the authorities’ continued commitment to ensuring road safety and preserving public order in Miri, especially during late-night hours when such activities are more likely to occur.
