MIRI – Police in Miri have confirmed that 20 summonses were issued during a special traffic enforcement operation targeting drunk driving offences.
The initiative, known as “Drunk Operation”, was conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters (IPD) between 11.00pm on 6 June and 3.30am on 7 June 2026.
Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee bin Abdullah stated that the operation was led by a senior officer with six traffic personnel along the Miri-Airport Road.
The location was chosen due to its high traffic flow and as part of ongoing efforts to curb dangerous driving behaviours.
During the operation, 75 individuals comprising 55 men and 20 women were checked across 70 vehicles. Officers detected a range of traffic violations, including driving without a licence, modified exhaust systems, expired road tax, failure to display the probationary “P” sticker, and other technical offences.
Three local men aged between 28 and 31 were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Breathalyser tests using the Screening Device 2 (SD2) indicated the presence of alcohol, and blood samples were subsequently taken at the Miri Hospital Forensic Department for further analysis.
ACP Mohd Farhan highlighted that those convicted of drunk driving could face imprisonment of up to two years, fines ranging from RM10,000 to RM30,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence for two years.
He stressed that police would not compromise on cases involving individuals who endanger themselves and other road users by driving under the influence.
The police chief also reminded the public to comply with road regulations, avoid illegal vehicle modifications, and refrain from activities that disrupt public order.
He urged residents to report traffic offences or street gang activities to the Miri IPD or the nearest police station for immediate action.
Authorities continue to emphasise the importance of road safety in Sarawak, noting that enforcement operations are crucial in reducing accidents and protecting lives.
The latest operation reflects the police’s commitment to tackling drunk driving and ensuring safer roads for all.
