MIRI – The Miri Port Authority convened a departmental briefing on records disposal at its conference room on 14 April 2026, attended by 18 officers representing various divisions and sections.
The session was designed to strengthen understanding of records management practices and provide clear guidance on disposal procedures.
The briefing was facilitated by Ms Dizronica Nyalau Wan, Assistant Librarian from the Records Management Sector of the Sarawak State Library.
Participants were introduced to the official guidelines for identifying records eligible for disposal, with emphasis on compliance with state-level standards.
The briefing also included practical instruction on preparing disposal applications through the Archives and Records Management System (ARMS), a platform used to streamline documentation and approval processes.
In addition to the classroom-style briefing, officers joined a site visit to the department’s file storage facilities.
This exercise was conducted alongside the departmental records officer and the agency’s outreach officer, allowing participants to receive direct advisory input on managing physical records.
The visit highlighted the importance of maintaining proper storage conditions and ensuring that records are systematically reviewed before disposal proposals are submitted.
The initiative reflects wider efforts by government agencies in Sarawak to improve administrative efficiency and accountability.
Proper disposal of records not only reduces storage burdens but also ensures that sensitive information is handled responsibly in line with archival standards.
By equipping officers with practical knowledge and tools, the Miri Port Authority aims to enhance its internal processes and align with best practices promoted by the Sarawak State Library.
The briefing underscored the role of records management in supporting transparency, safeguarding institutional memory, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
The department has encouraged staff to seek further advice on records and archive management when necessary.
Officers can be contacted via telephone at 082-374000 or by email at statedepository@sarawak.gov.my for additional guidance.
