MIRI – The development of Miri Port is expected to serve as a major catalyst for economic transformation in northern Sarawak, positioning the city as a modern hub with international standards.
The project was highlighted by Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, during the opening of the Sarawakku Sayang 2026 Miri Division Programme on 25 April.
The Premier explained that the new port will be constructed in a sea area approximately seven to eight kilometres from the mouth of Sungai Baram.
With allocations already approved by the Sarawak government, the port is set to accommodate larger vessels and expand the region’s shipping capabilities.
“The development of this port will enable the shipping industry and related services that currently operate in Sungai Miri to be transferred to Kuala Baram. At the same time, we can develop a more planned and attractive waterfront area,” he said.
He added that the project will not only enhance the city’s physical landscape but also contribute to social development, including new residential areas and the creation of a modern coastal urban zone.
“If successfully realised, Miri has the potential to become a dynamic and attractive coastal city, on par with international cities such as Shanghai,” he remarked.
The deep-sea port is expected to welcome large ships, including cruise liners, which could stimulate tourism and generate new opportunities for local businesses.
By integrating infrastructure development with economic planning, the project aims to create a high-value urban environment that supports both commerce and leisure.
Observers note that the initiative aligns with Sarawak’s Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), which emphasises sustainable growth, competitiveness, and the well-being of the people.
The port project is seen as a cornerstone of this vision, offering long-term benefits for trade, tourism, and community development.
The Premier’s announcement reflects the government’s determination to elevate Miri’s status as a regional economic powerhouse.
With improved connectivity and modern facilities, the port is expected to attract investment, strengthen logistics, and enhance Sarawak’s position in the global economy.
