MIRI – Police seized 19 motorcycles and issued 149 summonses for various traffic offences during the Op Samseng Jalanan Ambang Merdeka carried out around the city last night.
Miri District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, said the operation was part of ongoing enforcement efforts to curb illegal racing, dangerous modifications, and reckless behaviour among road users.
According to him, a total of 47 vehicles were inspected in the operation which ran from 10.00 pm until 4.00 am, led by two senior officers and five members of the Miri District Police Headquarters’ Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division.
Of the vehicles checked, 19 motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for being heavily modified or requiring further inspection.
“Police also inspected 52 individuals and issued 149 summonses for various traffic offences,” Mohd Farhan said in a statement.
The operation focused on several key locations in Miri including Jalan Marina, Jalan Miri Bypass and Jalan Tanjong Lobang, areas often identified as hotspots for illegal gatherings and street racing.
Mohd Farhan emphasised that such enforcement will continue on a regular basis to curb samseng jalanan activities and protect the safety of road users.
“The public should understand that modifying vehicles, participating in illegal racing or loitering by the roadside not only disrupts traffic but also endangers lives,” he added.
He reminded motorcyclists to always comply with road regulations and warned that irresponsible actions could result in accidents that harm both the rider and other motorists.
The public is also urged to assist the authorities by providing information regarding illegal street activities. Reports can be made directly to the Miri IPD Operations Room at 085-433400.
