MIRI – Construction work is actively underway on a new parking facility and associated access roads for two major schools here, despite facing minor scheduling setbacks.
The RM1.6 million project at SMK Pujut Miri and SK Senadin is currently approximately four percent behind its original timeline.
Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, the Sarawak Transport Minister and local Senadin Assemblyman, confirmed the progress during a site inspection on Friday.
He attributed the delay primarily to the necessary soil stabilisation process that must be completed before paving can commence.
Minister Lee expressed confidence that the contractor would recover the lost time promptly. “They need to wait for the land reclamation work to be completed and the land to be stabilised before continuing,” he stated, adding that stone-laying work is scheduled to begin the following week.
Initiated on 24 February 2025, the project is being funded through the Senadin constituency’s people’s project programme and managed by the Miri City Council (MBM).
Its primary objective is to alleviate significant traffic congestion around the two schools, which together enrol more than 3,700 students.
The minister emphasised the critical need for the new infrastructure, noting that the high student population creates considerable congestion during peak drop-off and collection times.
The development is expected to be fully operational by the end of February or early March 2026, providing substantial benefits to staff, parents, and local residents.
