MIRI – Sarawak has marked another milestone in its public transport transformation agenda with the launch of the Bus Signal Priority (BSP) operation for Smart Bus Services in Miri, making the city the first in Malaysia to implement the system.
Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to strengthening urban mobility, improving service efficiency, and supporting sustainable development.
“Traffic congestion is a global challenge that affects productivity and quality of life. Public transport must be the backbone of an efficient and inclusive urban mobility system,” he said during the launch event on Tuesday.
The BSP system allows buses to be prioritised at traffic light intersections through smart technology, reducing waiting times, smoothing traffic flows, and improving the accuracy of bus service schedules.
Dato Sri Lee highlighted that the Sarawak Government has already introduced 14 smart bus units in Miri, opened the Miri Sentral Bus Terminal, and launched the Sarawak Smart Transport Application to provide the public with easier access to transport information.
The minister emphasised that these initiatives are part of a wider effort to modernise Sarawak’s transport system, ensuring that urban mobility solutions are inclusive and sustainable.
The event was attended by key officials including Ts Chong Chi Fam, Head of Land Transport and Logistics at MOTS; Norizan Jili, Director of the Sarawak Road Transport Department; Elizebeth Mayang Thomas, Head of the Miri Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board Branch; Ir. Stephen Ung Neng Hui, Miri JKR Division Engineer; Rafiq Azli Ramli, Miri Resident Representative; and Mr Chan Hua Kheng, Managing Director of KTT Sdn Bhd, alongside community leaders and representatives from educational institutions.
The introduction of BSP in Miri is expected to set a benchmark for other cities in Malaysia, positioning Sarawak as a leader in adopting smart transport solutions to enhance connectivity and reduce congestion.
