Swift Action Taken as Soil Erosion Threatens Safety in Miri

MIRI – Concerns over residents’ safety in Taman Hilltop 3A prompted immediate intervention from state leaders after soil erosion was reported following continuous heavy rainfall.

Sarawak Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, and Piasau Assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, visited the site on Tuesday to assess the situation.

He explained that prolonged rain had left the soil behind several houses soft and waterlogged, weakening its structure and compromising stability.

This situation has further worsened the stability of the soil retaining structure that was built more than 30 years ago and is now no longer able to withstand water pressure and soil load at the current level,” he said during the inspection.

Two houses were identified as being directly affected, with soil behind them showing signs of serious weakness. The erosion also displaced gas pipelines, causing leaks and heightening safety risks for nearby residents.

Datuk Ting confirmed that relevant agencies were contacted immediately to take control of the situation and initiate technical measures.

As a temporary solution, the ground team covered the erosion area with canvas sheets to slow soil movement and reduce immediate danger.

We have also advised nearby residents to remain vigilant, especially with the forecast of rain expected to continue in the next few days,” he added.

He stressed that all technical reports and related information have been forwarded to the responsible department for comprehensive follow-up action. The priority, he said, is to ensure the safety and welfare of residents in the affected area.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of older infrastructure to extreme weather conditions, particularly in areas prone to heavy rainfall.

Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and cooperate with safety measures while long-term solutions are being planned.
