Miri Police Nab Teen Rider in Late-Night Street Gang Crackdown

MIRI – A 17-year-old male teenager was arrested in a major street gang crackdown here after his reckless riding led to a fatal accident during Op Samseng Jalanan in several parts of the city early this morning.

The operation, conducted from 11.00pm to 3.00am, covered Jalan Banda Raya Miri, Marina Utama, Jalan Miri-Bypass, Jalan Tanjung Lobang, Jalan Tudan, Jalan Permyjaya and Jalan Canada Hill.

Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said in a statement that the teenager was detained under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for dangerous driving.

“During the operation, a total of 23 individuals were inspected. Police also arrested a 40-year-old local man under suspicious circumstances. Further checks uncovered a packet containing transparent tubes suspected to hold Methamphetamine.

“The suspect was handed over to the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of Miri IPD for further investigation,” he said.

According to Mohd Farhan, the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division also inspected 20 vehicles during the operation. Ten motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for being modified from their original specifications.

“This operation aims to curb street gang activities and ensure all road users comply with the law and traffic regulations. It will continue to be conducted from time to time,” he stressed.

He urged motorcyclists to ride prudently, avoid illegal gatherings, and refrain from modifying their vehicles. Such actions, he warned, can cause traffic congestion, noise disturbances, and risk to public safety.

“The negligence of riders and drivers not only endangers themselves but also other road users. The public with information on street gang activities should contact our operations room at 085-433400,” he added.
