KUCHING, April 24 – An Australian woman who was reported missing while hiking at Mount Santubong has been found safe today, bringing relief to authorities and the public after an overnight search and rescue operation.
The victim, identified as Belinda Lapier, was located by search and rescue (SAR) teams at 11.59am. According to the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Sarawak Operations Centre, she was found with only minor injuries after going missing during her descent from the mountain.
Initial findings suggest that the woman had strayed from the designated F10 trail while making her way down, before becoming disoriented and ending up in the F7 area. The rugged terrain and dense forest are believed to have contributed to her losing her way.
The department received an emergency call regarding the incident at approximately 8.20pm the previous night. Following the report, a team from the Petra Jaya Fire and Rescue Station was immediately deployed to the location to begin search efforts.
The operation entered its second day under challenging conditions. Authorities described the terrain as extremely steep, with inclines reaching up to 90 degrees in certain areas. The landscape was also filled with large rocks and thick vegetation, making access difficult and increasing the risk to rescuers.
To overcome these obstacles, the SAR team was divided into two groups. One group attempted to approach the victim using the original route, while the second group navigated an alternative path after the initial route was deemed too dangerous. Their coordinated efforts eventually led to the successful discovery of the missing hiker.
The rescue operation involved multiple agencies, including the Fire and Rescue Department, the Royal Malaysia Police, and forest rangers, all working together to ensure the safety of the victim.
Following her discovery, the woman was assisted out of the forest and brought to the main road. Authorities confirmed that she remained conscious and stable throughout the rescue process.
Rescue efforts are continuing to ensure her full evacuation from the mountain area and to monitor her condition. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved in hiking, particularly in challenging terrains such as Mount Santubong, and the importance of staying on marked trails.
