Missing Woman on Pulau Bruit Found Safe After Intensive Search

PULAU BRUIT – A woman reported missing earlier this week on Pulau Bruit has been found alive and in good health, following an extensive search and rescue operation coordinated by local authorities.

The victim, identified as Suriya Merais, 52, was discovered around midday after rescue teams widened their search perimeter to six kilometres from the point she was last seen. She had reportedly gone into the forest to collect fruit but failed to return home, sparking concern among her family and prompting a full-scale operation.

Search teams were guided by clues found in the forest, including a sack of asam paya fruit believed to have been left behind by the victim. According to Daro Fire and Rescue Station Chief Hasman Bakar, these signs proved crucial in tracing her movements and ultimately locating her. “The clues helped the team track the victim’s location before she was finally found safe,” he explained.

The operation was supported by multiple agencies, with personnel working tirelessly to ensure the woman’s safety. The search effort was intensified after initial sweeps of the area yielded no results, leading to the expansion of the radius and eventual success.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS), Datuk Abdullah Saidol, visited the operations control centre at the Kampung Penibong Water Plant during the search. He met with rescue personnel and expressed hope that the missing woman would be found in time to reunite with her family. His prayers were answered when the victim was located safely.

Family members had raised the alarm after Suriya failed to return home on Monday evening. Her disappearance caused significant worry within the community, particularly as she was known to frequent the forest in search of sekiu fruit.

The successful outcome highlights the dedication of Sarawak’s emergency services and the importance of community cooperation in such operations. Authorities emphasised that the case demonstrates the readiness of local rescue teams to respond swiftly to emergencies, ensuring the safety of residents in rural areas.

The incident also underscores the risks faced by villagers who venture into forested areas alone. Officials have reminded the public to take precautions when engaging in such activities, including informing family members of their whereabouts and carrying communication devices where possible.

The safe recovery of Suriya Merais has brought relief to her family and the wider community, with many praising the commitment of the search and rescue teams. The operation stands as a testament to the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between government agencies and local residents in safeguarding lives.
