Mizuho Bank Backs Sarawak's Sustainable Energy Drive

Mizuho Bank Backs Sarawak’s Sustainable Energy Drive

KUCHING – Japanese financial giant Mizuho Bank has expressed its commitment to support Sarawak’s ambitious sustainable energy projects, following a high-level meeting with the state’s Premier.

The bank’s Asia Pacific Chief Executive Officer, Koichi Zaiki, stated the institution is prepared to offer its financing and advisory expertise for developments in areas including hydrogen, biomass, and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS).

This collaboration aligns with Sarawak’s broader strategy to become a regional leader in renewable energy.

The courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg served to introduce Mizuho’s decarbonisation capabilities.

Zaiki highlighted the bank’s extensive experience in leading similar projects across the Asia Pacific region.

“As a bank, we can not only provide financing, but also advisory services to ensure that the projects here can be realised in a bankable and viable manner,” Zaiki told reporters.

The discussions also explored potential partnerships with local banks to strengthen the financial ecosystem for these ventures. The Premier was reported to be very positive about accelerating these joint efforts.

This potential partnership with a major Japanese financial institution comes at a strategic time for Sarawak’s energy ambitions.

The state recently unveiled a comprehensive five-point plan to establish itself as a renewable hydrogen hub at the World Hydrogen Asia 2025 conference.

Furthermore, Sarawak’s energy transition is already underway, having achieved a 72 per cent reduction in carbon emissions between 2010 and 2023.
