KUCHING – Northern Sarawak is set for a major transformation with the launch of the Miri–Marudi, Marudi–Mulu (Kuala Melinau) and Long Lama–Long Panai (MMMLL) Road Project, a RM3.8 billion initiative spearheaded by the Sarawak Government through the Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA).
The project will be officially launched by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg at the Marudi Light Industrial Area on 15 November.
According to RECODA Chief Executive Officer Datu Ismawi Ismuni, the MMMLL project is designed to strengthen connectivity in northern Sarawak, reduce travel times, and open new opportunities for economic growth and rural tourism.
Once completed, travel between Miri and Marudi will take just 30 minutes, compared to the current journey of over 1 hour 40 minutes.
The Marudi–Mulu (Kuala Melinau) route will be shortened to around 90 minutes, while the Long Panai–Long Lama stretch will take about 60 minutes.
The project incorporates R5 construction standards for the Miri–Marudi alignment and R3 standards for the Marudi–Mulu and Long Panai–Long Lama routes.
These specifications are consistent with the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road Phase 2 (SSLR2), which will continue in Kuala Melinau.
Beyond improving safety and comfort for road users, the MMMLL project is expected to stimulate local economies by facilitating the marketing of agricultural products and expanding access to new markets.
Datu Ismawi highlighted that the construction of a land route to Mulu, previously accessible only by air, will significantly boost tourism.
“So far, tourists have had to take a flight to Mulu. With the new road, more tourists will be able to visit, thus boosting the local economy, especially in Marudi which will become a major stop for tourism and trade,” he said.
The project also includes the construction of access roads to settlements and schools in Long Ukok, Long Linei and Long Panai, ensuring that rural communities benefit directly from improved infrastructure.
The MMMLL Launching Ceremony will take place this Saturday from 8.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m., featuring performances by local artists including Dayana Shini, Lucy M, Firdaus Materang and Eyqa Saiful. Visitors will also have the chance to win one of 15 lucky draw prizes, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The MMMLL project underscores Sarawak’s commitment to balanced development, ensuring that rural areas gain access to modern infrastructure while creating new pathways for tourism, trade, and community growth.
