Mother, Two Children Killed in Dungun Crash

DUNGUN – A joyful family gathering ended in tragedy when a mother and her two children were killed in a road accident along Jalan Jerangau-Jabor near Felda Jerangau here on Sunday evening.

The victims were identified as Nurul Hafizah Shaary, 39, and her children Muhammad Redzuan Arash Mohamad Redzuan, 13, and Nur Radya Athalia, four. The accident occurred at about 6pm at Kilometer 59 of the road.

Dungun District Police Chief, Superintendent Maizura Abdul Kadir, confirmed that Nurul Hafizah, who was driving a Perodua Aruz sport utility vehicle, and her 13-year-old son were pronounced dead at the scene. Her youngest daughter was confirmed dead upon arrival at Klinik Kesihatan Jerangau.

Two other children in the vehicle, Nur Raesha Amanda, 14, and Nur Rakhis Aral Yn, nine, sustained serious injuries. They were rushed to Hospital Dungun for further treatment.

According to police investigations, Nurul Hafizah was travelling from Jerangau to Ajil, Hulu Terengganu, with her five children when the accident happened. She had earlier attended her youngest sibling’s wedding ceremony in Jerangau.

Initial investigations revealed that the SUV is believed to have lost control upon reaching the location. The vehicle reportedly skidded into the opposite lane before hitting a water pipe and crashing into an electricity pole on the right side of the road.

The bodies of the deceased were sent to Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah in Kuala Terengganu for post-mortem examination. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Meanwhile, the victim’s younger brother, Mohd Saddam, 33, said the accident occurred only a few hours after they had gathered to celebrate their youngest sibling’s wedding. He described his sister as cheerful and warm during the ceremony, even taking time to joke with family members.

He said the family was deeply shocked and devastated upon receiving the news of the fatal crash. What began as a day of happiness quickly turned into a moment of sorrow that the family will never forget.

The tragic incident serves as a reminder to all road users to remain cautious and alert at all times, especially during long-distance travel after attending events or celebrations. Authorities continue to advise motorists to prioritise safety and adhere strictly to traffic regulations. — Bernama
