MOTS Responds Swiftly to Ensure River Safety at Piasau Bridge in Miri

MIRI — The Sarawak Ministry of Transport (MOTS) has reaffirmed its commitment to public safety with a swift and effective response to a river safety hazard reported under the Piasau Bridge.

A floating “rubber trap” structure beneath the bridge had become entangled with a large nipah stump, prompting safety concerns among river users. Upon receiving the report, MOTS immediately directed the Miri Division team from Lembaga Sungai-Sungai Sarawak (LSS) to take prompt remedial action.

The LSS Miri team acted without delay, successfully removing the obstruction and restoring the affected river area to a safe and navigable condition. The incident was handled efficiently, showcasing the team’s preparedness and technical capabilities.

Sarawak’s Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, expressed his gratitude to the concerned members of the public who reported the issue and commended the professionalism of the LSS Miri team.

“Our ministry takes every report from the public seriously, especially those related to safety and the integrity of our public infrastructure,” said Lee in a media statement on Tuesday. “I thank the Lembaga Sungai-Sungai Sarawak team for their immediate and effective response.”

He further encouraged the public to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting any hazards along river routes or near critical infrastructure.

“Timely information from the public can help us prevent potential disasters and ensure the safety and well-being of all river users,” he added.

The incident highlights the importance of community involvement and inter-agency cooperation in maintaining Sarawak’s river safety and infrastructure resilience.
