KOTA SAMARAHAN – The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) has taken a significant step towards modernising its enforcement system with the introduction of body cameras for enforcement officers. The initiative aims to strengthen integrity, transparency, and security in the execution of duties.
The launch ceremony, held at the MPKS Municipal Council Building on Friday, was officiated by Municipal Chairman Abang Ismawi Abang Ali, alongside Deputy Chairman Daily Joseph and Council Secretary Gustian Durani.
In his address, Abang Ismawi highlighted the growing demand for transparency and accountability among local authorities, particularly in an increasingly digital and fast-paced environment.
He noted that the use of body cameras would enhance public confidence in MPKS by ensuring enforcement is carried out fairly and prudently.
“This initiative is expected to increase the people’s confidence in MPKS when enforcement is carried out transparently, fairly and prudently, in addition to assisting the investigation and documentation process through recordings that can be used as references or legal evidence,” he said.
He explained that enforcement officers often face challenges such as handling public complaints, conducting operations, and managing security risks.
The introduction of body cameras is part of MPKS’s proactive approach under its Smart Enforcement System, aligned with the broader Smart City initiative and Sarawak’s digitalisation agenda.
The programme also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
By leveraging digital technology, smart systems, and data innovation, MPKS aims to improve urban service efficiency and enhance community quality of life.
The body cameras are expected to deliver multiple benefits, including safeguarding officers and the public through visual recordings that can serve as legal evidence.
They also reduce risks of misunderstandings, false allegations, or unwanted incidents during enforcement operations.
Additionally, the recordings will reinforce officer integrity by ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and adherence to ethical and professional communication practices.
The initiative reflects MPKS’s vision of integrity-based governance and its mission to deliver efficient, safe, and transparent urban services through smart technology.
The launch marks another milestone in Kota Samarahan’s journey towards becoming a modern, sustainable, and digitally empowered municipality.
