PADAWAN – The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has implemented preventive drainage works at Taman Cavery, 13th Mile Kuching-Serian Road, to mitigate the risk of flash floods in the area.
Water blockage clearing operations were conducted to ensure uninterrupted flow of water and clean discharge of stormwater during heavy rainfall. The initiative is part of regular maintenance to improve flood resilience in residential areas, the officials said.
Many drainage systems in an urban or semi-urban area are ill-suited to cope with increased rainfall intensity and rapid developments. As a result of clearing debris and obstructions, MPP aims to improve the efficiency of the drainage network surrounding the community and protect it from future flood events.
The move has been welcomed by local residents, as flash floods are a common occurrence in many areas within Padawan. This upgraded drainage capacity will be able to resolve waterlogging issues and work as a reassurance in the monsoon season.
Maintenance works will be performed regularly as well, said MPP. Preventive measures are more effective than emergency responses, officials said, because they minimise risks ahead of time before problems materialise.
The council’s initiative is part of a wider effort by Sarawak to bolster the infrastructure and shield its communities from climate-related trials. As extreme and unpredictable weather conditions increase, the emphasis is on proactive drainage management that would ensure long-term sustainability and safety.
Community leaders have been urging residents to do their part by not littering and making sure household waste doesn’t get caught in drains, which can cause blockages. It is widely believed that public cooperation is crucial for the proper functioning of drainage systems.
The Taman Cavery works are one of a number of flood mitigation measures being implemented throughout Padawan. MPP has promised residents similar action in other vulnerable areas, following the council’s commitment to create a safer and more liveable place.
