KUCHING – The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) organised a Fire Safety Programme on 9 May 2026, aimed at raising awareness among business premises owners under its jurisdiction.
The initiative focused on compliance with licensing conditions, building regulations, and fire prevention measures.
The programme began with a briefing by the MPP Licensing Unit on the application process for a Letter of Support required by the LHDN Business Licence Registrar.
This was followed by a session from the MPP Planning and Development Division, which outlined key aspects of the Sarawak Building Ordinance 1994, including building plan approval, occupation permits, and the issue of unauthorised structures.
Participants then attended a fire safety talk conducted by the Siburan Fire and Rescue Department. The session provided practical guidance on fire prevention, early response during emergencies, and the importance of maintaining safe premises in line with regulatory requirements.
The programme was designed to equip business owners with essential knowledge to safeguard their premises and ensure compliance with legal standards.
By combining licensing, building regulation, and fire safety awareness, MPP sought to strengthen overall preparedness and reduce risks within the community.
At the closing ceremony, MPP Chairman Cr Tan Kai officiated the event. He was joined by PPgB Tuan Muhammad Imran Bin Mohamad Sabri, Station Chief of the Siburan Fire and Rescue Station, MPP Municipal Secretary Ir Ts Goh Thiam Ho, council members, and members of the media.
Cr Tan Kai emphasised that fire safety is a shared responsibility and urged business owners to take proactive steps in protecting their premises.
He noted that awareness programmes such as this are vital in fostering a culture of safety and compliance, which in turn supports sustainable business operations.
The Siburan Fire and Rescue Department highlighted the importance of early action during emergencies, stressing that preparedness can save lives and minimise damage.
Their presentation included practical advice on fire prevention techniques, emergency response procedures, and the significance of maintaining equipment such as extinguishers and alarms.
MPP reiterated its commitment to supporting business owners through continuous engagement and educational initiatives.
The council plans to expand similar programmes in the future, ensuring that safety standards remain a priority across all business premises under its jurisdiction.
The Fire Safety Programme 2026 reflects MPP’s broader mission of promoting community well-being, regulatory compliance, and sustainable development.
By working closely with enforcement agencies and local businesses, the council aims to build a safer and more resilient environment for all.
