Padawan Council Enforces Stop Work Order on Unapproved Structure

PADAWAN – The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has served a stop work notice to an individual who constructed an illegal structure in a public area, promising that it will continue enforcing the Building Ordinance and protect community spaces.

The enforcement took face place as the MPP’s Enforcement Unit on 20 January 2026. The Building Ordinance says very absolutely and definitely that no person shall erect or construct a building without some written permission from the local authority. The Council stressed that the regulation is necessary to provide for safety, order and appropriate use of public spaces.

Public spaces are what they say, shared areas intended for the enjoyment of all residents, officials said. Unpermitted buildings don’t just fly in the face of any regulations, they also pose a threat to access and safety to the public. The Council also warned misuse of these areas will not be tolerated, and they would take enforcement action for any violations.

The stop work notice is a reminder to the community they should apply before building, in particular on public or shared spaces. MPP emphasised that the clearance process was there to secure safety compliance, town planning and community interests.

The local authorities throughout Sarawak have stepped up efforts to ensure that people abide by the requirements, especially in urban development areas and with rising demand for amenities. By regulating lifestyle choices, councils want to ensure that developments are consistent and orderly as well as protect residents from any danger associated with unenforced structures.

Community leaders cheered the Council for taking a stand on enforcement, saying that it helps to maintain the good quality of shared spaces and prevents infighting among residents. The move also highlights broader campaigns by local officials to improve governance and make development follow legal and safety standards.

The Council repeated its plea for public support asking people to respect the rules and work with local authorities to ensure safe, welcoming places for all. MPP also promised that it will keep a tab on public spaces and take appropriate action against unauthorised construction.

This recent enforcement further proves that the council is committed to take proactive measures in managing urban development and safeguarding community interests as public space protector in Padawan.
