Mukah Road Safety Campaign Stresses Shared Responsibility During Festive Travel

MUKAH – Road safety has been highlighted as a collective responsibility, particularly during festive seasons when traffic volumes rise as people return to their hometowns.

Deputy Minister of Economy and Member of Parliament for Mukah, Dato Hanifah Taib, officiated the Road Safety Council (MKJR) Programme in conjunction with the Christmas 2025 celebration at Dataran Pehin Setia Raja on Sunday.

She reminded the public to remain vigilant during festive travel, stressing that heightened alertness is crucial to prevent accidents.

“We need to increase our level of alertness, especially during festive seasons when many are returning to their hometowns,” she said.

Hanifah also urged families to secure their homes before travelling, advising checks on electrical supplies and ensuring doors and windows are locked.

She emphasised that safe journeys begin with proper preparation, including vehicle inspections and adequate rest for drivers.

As part of the programme, 60 helmets and 100 souvenir packs were distributed to the local community, with a particular focus on motorcyclists.

The initiative aimed to raise awareness of road safety practices and encourage responsible behaviour among road users.

The event was attended by Mukah District Officer Peleadzman Ahip, Head of the Mukah Branch of the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Dayang Feridzah Awang Kadir, and Mukah District Police Chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias, reflecting strong collaboration between government agencies and local authorities.

Speeches during the programme reinforced the message that road safety is not solely the responsibility of enforcement agencies but requires active participation from all members of society.

Parents, schools and communities were urged to play their part in instilling safe practices and supporting awareness campaigns.

Observers note that festive seasons often see a spike in road accidents due to increased travel, fatigue and vehicle congestion.

Programmes such as MKJR aim to reduce risks by promoting preventive measures and encouraging shared responsibility among road users.

With the Christmas and New Year holidays approaching, the campaign serves as a timely reminder for Sarawakians to prioritise safety both on the road and at home, ensuring celebrations remain joyful and free from tragedy.
