MUKAH — A RM2 million smart traffic light system at Jalai Wawasan junction aims to significantly reduce accidents at this identified blackspot, Tellian Assemblyman Royston Valentine announced during Tuesday’s project handover to Dalat and Mukah District Council (MDDM).
The six-month initiative (July 9 – November 19, 2025) integrates advanced sensors with comprehensive infrastructure upgrades to address chronic safety concerns.
“Beyond optimizing traffic flow, this project directly responds to persistent accident patterns—including unreported incidents causing injuries,” Valentine stated after the site transfer ceremony attended by MDDM Chairperson Aini Suhaili.
The works extend beyond signal installation to include new drainage systems, road realignment, and utility pole relocation, collectively addressing environmental factors contributing to collisions.
The smart traffic lights will utilize adaptive timing technology that adjusts to real-time vehicle and pedestrian volume—a first for Mukah district. This aligns with Sarawak’s broader “Vision for Road Safety 2030” targeting a 40% reduction in fatalities at high-risk junctions.
Valentine emphasized that the blackspot has recorded 12 injury-causing accidents in the past 18 months based on police data, though near-misses remain underdocumented.
MDDM will oversee contractor compliance during construction, ensuring minimal disruption to the commercial corridor linking Mukah’s industrial and residential zones.
The upgrade complements recent state investments including Mukah’s coastal highway guardrail installations and school-zone speed cameras.
