Mutual Trust Key to Kuching’s Growth as a Harmonious and Resilient City

Mutual Trust Key to Kuching’s Growth as a Harmonious and Resilient City

KUCHING – Mutual trust between the government and its citizens forms the foundation of a harmonious and resilient city, said Mayor of the South Kuching City Council (MBKS), Dato Wee Hong Seng.

Speaking during the Birthday Celebration Dinner of Lord Guan Gong on Sunday, Dato Wee emphasised that trust fosters key values such as loyalty, justice, courage, and kindness—principles that are essential not only in religious and social life but also in effective and ethical urban governance.

“At MBKS, we are committed to upholding these values in every aspect of city management. Our policies will remain loyal to the people, fair in their formulation, and inclusive of all communities, regardless of race or religion,” he stated.

He highlighted that such mutual trust is crucial in creating a united society and strengthening the resilience of the city in the face of modern challenges.

Reflecting on the event, Dato Wee noted that the celebration of Lord Guan Gong’s birthday transcends religious observance. It symbolises the strength of cultural unity among Kuching’s diverse communities. He commended the temple’s broader role as a community hub for welfare, education, and social support.

“Places of worship are more than just spiritual centres—they are community pillars that contribute to the well-being of society. I applaud the organisers for promoting unity through culture,” he said, adding that this is a model of how heritage can build bridges across differences.

Dato Wee reaffirmed MBKS’s commitment to supporting inclusive cultural programmes that honour diversity and foster togetherness.

“Efforts like these contribute immensely to shaping Kuching as a modern, progressive city that stays true to its cultural heritage,” he concluded.

He expressed optimism for Kuching’s future as a city that grows with prosperity and provides space for all citizens to live in harmony, built on a foundation of trust and mutual respect.
