My City’s First Lecture Promotes Unity During Kuching Festival 2025

KUCHING – Over 500 people gathered at Demak Baru Mosque on Saturday evening for My City’s First Lecture, an event held in conjunction with the ongoing Kuching Festival 2025. Organised by the North Kuching City Hall (DBKU), the lecture served as a platform to promote unity and harmony among Kuching’s multiracial communities.

Renowned Islamic scholar Al-Fadhil Ustaz Dato’ Mohd Kazim Elias delivered a thought-provoking lecture titled “Madinah Charter: Symbol of Unity of Multi-Racial Communities.” The talk, infused with spiritual insights and historical reflections, centred on the importance of shared values such as justice, leadership, and community togetherness — drawn from the principles of the Madinah Charter.

Present at the event were Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department and Project Coordinator for DBKU and Islamic Affairs, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, and his wife, Datin Siti Shorgayah Ahmad Zaidin. The Mayor of DBKU, Dato Hilmy Othman, also attended, showing strong institutional support for initiatives fostering social cohesion.

The programme, which commenced at 6:30 PM, was supported by strategic partners including the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), Baitulmal Sarawak, and JAKIM Sarawak.

Aimed at reinforcing DBKU’s City for All policy, the lecture focused not only on religious teachings but also on fostering tolerance, respect, and understanding across diverse ethnic and cultural lines.

Beyond religious enrichment, the event contributed to DBKU’s wider goals of sustainable community development by encouraging civic engagement, strengthening inter-agency networks, and promoting inclusive societal growth.
