SIBU – The Namo Buddhist Society Sibu has received an allocation of RM1 million from the Other Religions Affairs Unit (UNIFOR) to support the ongoing construction of a new monastery at Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce.
The cheque handover ceremony was officiated by Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, State Assemblyman for Bukit Assek, on Sunday.
He described the allocation as a reflection of the Sarawak Government’s inclusive policy in promoting religious harmony and diversity across the state.
“This allocation is the third phase that UNIFOR has channelled to the association since 2021, bringing the total amount of funds received so far to RM1.65 million,” Chieng said.
He noted that the construction of the monastery has made significant progress within a year. “Last year when I came, only the foundation was completed.
Today it has gone up two and a half storeys. According to the association chairman, the main structure is expected to be completed by the end of next year,” he explained.
The new monastery, named Namo Buddha Monastery, will be the first of its kind in Sibu. Beyond serving as a centre of worship, it is also envisioned as a potential tourist attraction that could contribute to the local economy.
The project underscores Sarawak’s commitment to supporting non-Muslim religious institutions through UNIFOR, which has channelled hundreds of millions of ringgit since its establishment to strengthen interfaith harmony.
Community leaders believe the monastery will not only provide a spiritual sanctuary but also enhance Sibu’s cultural landscape, offering visitors a glimpse into Sarawak’s rich religious diversity.
