Nanga Melipis Ferry Project to Boost Rural Connectivity in Kapit

KAPIT – Rural transport access in Kapit is set for a major upgrade with the launch of the Nanga Melipis Ferry Project, a government initiative aimed at improving connectivity across the Batang Rajang River.

The project, worth RM21.3 million, involves the construction and completion of ferry landing facilities and the operation of a 24-car ferry service. It will be implemented over 18 months, beginning on 11 June 2025 and scheduled for completion by 10 December 2026.

Oversight will be carried out by the Sarawak Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) and the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR).

Minister of Works and Kapit MP, Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, said the ferry will provide safe and efficient cross-river services, directly benefiting six longhouses and SK Ulu Melipis, with more than 1,200 residents expected to gain from the improved access.

The scope of the project includes the construction of reinforced concrete ramps at Nanga Melipis and Rumah Robert, installation of 10 dolphin fenders, and the provision of public facilities such as waiting areas and toilets. Ferry fares will be kept affordable at RM1 per trip, ensuring accessibility for all.

“This project is clear evidence that the government listens to the needs of rural communities and is committed to providing safe and reliable transportation facilities,” Nanta said during the launch ceremony.

Also present was Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Bumiputera Law and Custom) and Bukit Goram State Assemblyman (ADUN). He emphasised that the project reflects the state government’s concern for rural development under the leadership of the Sarawak Premier.

“This initiative strengthens the transportation network and stimulates local economic growth. Let us continue to support the government’s efforts to ensure the well-being of rural communities in line with the spirit of Segulai Sejalai,” he said.

The ferry project is part of Sarawak’s broader strategy to enhance rural infrastructure, complementing other road and transport initiatives in Kapit Division. By improving mobility, the project is expected to facilitate trade, education access, and healthcare services, while also reducing the isolation of longhouse communities along the river.

Upon completion, the Nanga Melipis ferry will not only serve as a vital transport link but also as a symbol of the government’s ongoing commitment to inclusive development in Sarawak’s interior regions.
