Israel is inching toward a full-scale occupation of the Gaza Strip after a collapse in indirect ceasefire talks with Hamas. According to Israeli media sources, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that “the decision is made — we are going to conquer the Gaza Strip,” citing intelligence reported by Channel 12 and N12 news outlets.

The move comes as U.S.-backed peace negotiations faltered in Doha over a proposed 60‑day truce and hostage‑exchange deal. Israel is now opting for expanded military pressure, with leaders pushing to seize the entire enclave to force Hamas’s surrender and secure the release of remaining Israeli hostages.

Netanyahu outlined three clear goals: defeat Hamas militarily, free Israeli hostages, and ensure Gaza no longer poses a security threat. He is expected to convene the security cabinet on August 5, 2025 to formalize plans for expanded operations beyond the 75% of Gaza already under Israeli control.

Internally, Israeli military leadership opposes the proposed expansion. IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has reportedly warned that further ground operations could jeopardize the lives of the remaining estimated 20 hostages and drag the country into a protracted conflict.

Meanwhile, more than 600 former senior Israeli security officials released an open letter urging an end to the war. They cautioned that continuing the offensive may erode Israel’s strategic and moral standing abroad. Critics argue Netanyahu is delaying negotiations to preserve his political coalition rather than focusing on a lasting peace.

Humanitarian conditions in Gaza remain dire. Israeli bombardment and aid restrictions have led to widespread famine, with the UN warning of severe child mortality. Over 60,000 Palestinians are reported killed, and approximately 28 children are dying daily from starvation and dehydration in some areas.

In parallel, President Vladimir Putin urged Netanyahu to seek a peaceful resolution, emphasizing diplomacy over military escalation.

With global attention intensifying as Gaza teeters on the brink, Israel stands at a crossroads: pursue expanded military control or return to diplomacy amid mounting international pressure.
