BETONG – The RM248 million New Bebuling Airport project in Betong Division is scheduled to be completed by February 2026, marking a significant milestone in Sarawak’s infrastructure development.
The airport, designed as a Short Take-Off and Landing Port (STOLport), is expected to serve dual functions: passenger travel and cargo operations.
According to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, the facility will provide a vital link for communities in Spaoh and surrounding areas, enabling local produce and goods to reach wider markets and strengthening the rural economic chain.
During a recent working visit, Uggah inspected progress at the construction site and emphasised the airport’s role in stimulating economic growth.
He noted that the project is not only about connectivity but also about creating opportunities for agro-based industries and tourism.
“The airport will play two main roles, namely as a passenger transport and cargo transport to bring revenue to markets outside Spaoh, thus strengthening the rural economic chain,” he said.
The development includes the construction of a main terminal building, extensive earthworks, pavement works, and supporting public infrastructure.
Once operational, the airport is expected to complement initiatives such as the Collection, Packaging and Processing Centre (CPPC) and the Agropark, which aim to boost agricultural productivity and value-added processing.
Officials highlighted that the airport could also serve as a gateway for ecotourism in Betong Division, offering easier access for visitors to explore the region’s natural attractions. The project is seen as a catalyst for diversifying the local economy beyond agriculture.
In addition to the airport, Uggah was briefed on several other infrastructure projects currently underway in Betong.
These include the Sungai Krian Bridge (Coastal Package D4), the Highway to Roban Intersection (Coastal Package A5), the Batang Saribas Bridge No. 2 (Coastal Package A4), and the Sungai Paku Bridge. Rural road upgrades are also progressing, notably along the Jambu Krampak–Rantau Layan and Ijok–Batu Pesok–Rantau Layan routes.
The visit was attended by Betong MP Dato’ Dr Richard Rapu, Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) Director Datu Dr Cassidy Morris, and senior officers from related agencies.
Their presence underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring projects are delivered on schedule and meet the needs of local communities.
The New Bebuling Airport is part of Sarawak’s broader strategy to enhance connectivity and infrastructure across rural divisions.
Analysts have noted that improved transport links are essential for bridging the urban-rural divide, supporting trade, and encouraging investment in less developed regions.
With the completion target set for early 2026, the project reflects the state government’s determination to provide long-term benefits through modern infrastructure.
The airport is expected to become a cornerstone of Betong’s development, offering both economic and social advantages for residents.
